Excelsior / Portola / Visitacion Valley
Excelsior is one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in all of San Francisco. Recent waves of immigration from Asia and Latin America have joined many of the original Italian and Irish inhabitants. The result is a low key neighborhood in transition as newcomers discover the great weather, and easy access to public transportation on Mission Street. The commercial district is most vital at the Persia Triangle, the intersection of Ocean Avenue, Mission Street, and Persia Street. Produce markets, down home diners, and ethnic restaurants abound. McClaren Park offers a peaceful oasis of 317 acres including a 9-hole golf course, lake, tennis courts, and 700-seat amphitheater. For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts its trails contain rolling hills, meadows, and spectacular vistas.
