South of Market
The South of Market (SOMA) district of San Francisco offers a rich and complex collection of people and experiences. Once the center of San Francisco's light industry, SOMA’s huge city blocks of residential and industrial buildings now offer innovative stores, restaurants and entertainment. While it may be known for its warehouses, nightclubs and art spaces, SOMA also offers some of the best hotels, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
Stylish, modern lofts and condominiums in SOMA are likely to be flanked by light industrial businesses like auto shops and fabric wholesalers. Some pockets of SOMA have a more intimate feel with tree-lined blocks and slightly older architecture. Near Moscone Center there is the picturesque Yerba Buena Gardens, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMa), the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and for pop culture, the Cartoon Art Museum and the Metreon. Children enjoy going to Zeum and the Yerba Buena Ice Skating & Bowling Center. Grocery shopping is convenient and a wide range of high end retail shopping is available. Seen as the focus of urban living in San Francisco, SOMA offers easy access to the rest of the bay Area via CalTrain, MUNI and BART.
