Hayes Valley’s is nestled between Civic Center and Alamo Square, and offers a convenient location. For decades, Hayes Valley lay beneath a freeway onramp but in 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake radically changed the neighborhood. The damaged onramp was removed to encourage business and residential growth and the revamped exterior allowed many boutiques, bars and restaurants to fill the area surrounding Octavia Boulevard and Hayes Green.
While the homes in Hayes Valley are predominately single and multi-family Victorians - the most famous of which are the 'Painted Ladies' row homes along Alamo Square – the neighborhood now offers an eclectic mix of stylish lofts and contemporary condos. Hayes Valley is within walking distance of the City’s ballet, opera, and symphony, Asian Art Museum, main public library and City Hall. Hayes Valley also stretches into the Lower Haight district, which supplements a plethora of activities and attractions. Easy access to downtown and the freeway via Gough and Franklin Streets help to shorten commute times and public transportation includes 14 Muni lines, and a BART Station at the foot of Grove Street.
